WHAT IS A GOOD REACTION TIME?

A fast score is satisfying, but there is no single universal number that separates “good” from “bad.” The task, display, input device and measurement method all change the result.

The short answer

For a simple visual reaction task, research often places healthy adult responses in the low-to-mid hundreds of milliseconds. In a carefully calibrated study of 1,469 adults aged 18–65, mean simple visual reaction time was about 231 ms, or about 213 ms after correcting for measured hardware delay.

That does not mean every online reaction test should average 231 ms. Browser tests include the timing of your display, operating system, browser and input device, so two people with identical biological response speed can record different numbers on different setups.

Useful rule: compare yourself mainly with your own previous results on the same device. A stable 15 ms improvement on one setup tells you more than comparing a laptop score with somebody else's gaming PC.

Why “good” depends on the test

Simple reactionOne stimulus, one response. This is closest to Reaction Lab's Classic mode.
Choice reactionYou must identify the signal and choose a response, so times are normally longer.
Aim reactionIncludes visual detection plus cursor/finger movement to a target.
Go/no-go or fakeoutAdds inhibition: you must decide when not to respond as well as when to act.

Studies comparing simple, choice and go/no-go tasks show that task complexity changes response time. That is why a 240 ms Classic result cannot be compared directly with a 400 ms choice-response score.

How to judge your own score

  1. Use the same browser, monitor and input device.
  2. Take several attempts instead of treating one lucky result as your true speed.
  3. Ignore obvious false starts.
  4. Compare medians or averages over time.
  5. Remember that extremely low browser scores can be influenced by hardware timing and anticipation.

If your goal is gaming performance, the number itself is less important than whether you can react quickly and choose accurately under realistic conditions.

Why browser reaction tests differ

Laboratory research has measured substantial timing differences caused by monitors, input devices, software and operating systems. One calibrated study measured an LCD display delay of about 11 ms, while other work has shown that general-purpose computer hardware can add variable delay to online-style reaction measurements.

That is why Reaction Lab treats scores as a personal benchmark and entertainment tool rather than a medical or diagnostic result.
