In a simple reaction-time task, you already know what to do before the signal appears. A typical example is waiting for a screen to change colour and clicking as soon as it changes. The unknown part is when the signal will happen, not which response is required.
Because the response is prepared in advance, simple tasks are useful when you want a relatively clean browser benchmark of visual detection plus response execution. Reaction Lab’s Classic Reaction mode is built around this idea.
A choice task presents more than one possible signal and maps each signal to a different response. The player must first identify the stimulus, then choose the correct action. That extra processing normally makes the task slower than a one-response test.
Reaction Lab’s Choice Reaction mode therefore reports both speed and accuracy. The goal is not to mash a key as quickly as possible; it is to make the right response quickly.
If your Classic average is 220 ms and your Choice average is 360 ms, that does not mean you became 140 ms “slower.” You completed two different information-processing tasks. The choice result contains work that the simple result intentionally removes.
This is one reason reaction-time comparisons are most useful when the task is held constant. Compare Classic with Classic, Choice with Choice, and keep the device and settings consistent when tracking improvement.
Choice tests introduce a second outcome besides reaction time: errors. If you try to reduce latency by responding before you have correctly identified the signal, your error rate can rise. A sensible interpretation therefore considers both the response time of correct trials and the percentage of correct responses.
For gaming, sport and real-world decisions, this distinction is especially important. A very fast wrong response can be worse than a slightly slower correct one.
Together, simple and choice tests give a more useful picture than either number alone: one emphasizes rapid detection and execution, while the other adds decision-making.
